Papers and Presentations

The following papers and presentations were written for various organizations and conferences. While most deal with the domain of software development and maintenance, many of the concepts can be directly applied to other areas. Feel free to use these ideas, diagrams, charts and slides in your work, however, please give credit to the author(s) where applicable.

Papers are supplied in HTML, and Adobe Acrobat (PDF) format (as originally published). Presentations are supplied in PDF format only. If you are interested in the originals, contact me (slides in MS PowerPoint, articles in MS Word ).

Improvement Models

I have been using the one, two, and four engine models for a number of years. We have found that engineers and technical managers feel comfortable with the notion of a control loop when discussing software process documentation and improvement. Ron Nelson and I have published the following papers on the subject. Ron and I worked in the same group and co-authored many papers and presentations. He retired this year, but is still active in software engineering.

A Framework For Measurement Programs (The Two Engine Model)
Presented at the Third International Conference on Software Quality (ASQC) October, 1993, Lake Tahoe, Nevada. HTML format.

A Framework For Measurement Programs (The Two Engine Model)
